Women’s American Football in the UK is fully established, competitive, and supported by the British American Football Association (BAFA). Teams from across the UK compete in national leagues, tournaments, and development events.
The sport welcomes women of all backgrounds, body types, and experience levels. Whether you’ve played before or you’re completely new, there’s a place for you — and the community is incredibly supportive, inclusive, and empowering.

The Solent Thrashers Women are proud to be part of this movement, helping to grow the game and create opportunities for athletes locally and nationally.

Do I need any experience to join?

No experience is required! Most of our players started with no prior background in American Football. We teach all the fundamentals, from tackling to play concepts.

What ages can join the women’s team?

The women’s team is open to players aged 16 and over.

What fitness level do I need?

All fitness levels are welcome. Our coaching team will help you build strength, confidence, and skills at your own pace.

What should I bring to a session?

Wear comfortable sports clothing, trainers or football boots (moulds preferred), gumshield and bring water. We’ll provide helmets and pads during the introduction period.

When and where do you train?

Training typically takes place once or twice per week in the Solent/Fareham area. Exact times and locations are posted on our social media and shared with new recruits.

Is there a cost to join?

There is a membership fee for the season, but we keep the cost as accessible as possible. We also offer instalment plans. Taster sessions are always free.

What positions can I play?

There are roles for every body type and skill set — speedsters, powerhouses, tacticians, beginners, returners… anything! Coaches will help you find the position that fits you best.

What equipment do I need?

We provide helmets and shoulder pads for new players. Long-term, players usually acquire their own kit, but there’s support and advice available when you’re ready.

Do you play competitive games?

Yes! We compete in the BAFA Women’s League, facing teams from across the UK.

I’ve never played a contact sport — is it safe?

Player safety is our top priority. Coaches are trained in safe tackling techniques, and all sessions follow strict safety protocols. You’ll only progress at a pace you’re comfortable with.

I play another sport — can I still join?

Absolutely. Many of our athletes balance football with other sports. Just let the coaches know your schedule.

Can I volunteer instead of playing?
