My most common asked question is how am I recovering from chronic symptoms? I have been diagnosed with me/cfs and I have experienced MCAS reactions where I could only eat one type of food, I experienced POTS symptoms and hundreds of other chronic symptoms. I no longer experience MCAS/ POTS and other various symptoms I used to deal with daily, I am doing this by healing my nervous system and brain retraining. After years of my nervous system taking hits and becoming sensitised, It finally signalled to me it had enough by giving me symptoms which left me bed bound. After finding @re.covergirl on tiktok and watching Raelan Agles youtube channel (especially her interviewing dr schubinar) I began to understand the mind - body connection. 

How am I recovering?

What does brain retraining and nervous system healing entail? Initially, I thought this meant meditating and doing breath-work every time I had symptoms and it would fix everything for me! Yet this mindset that these tools will “fix” your symptoms only makes your nervous system believe there is actually something wrong with you and that symptoms are “dangerous”. Of course meditation and other various tools are amazing for regulation and for the mind but they will not get rid of any symptoms. Radical acceptance is my number one rule. If you fight symptoms, you will perceive them as dangerous. If you accept the symptoms and allow them to be present, this signals to your NS that there is nothing to fear. Somatic tracking is perfect in this case. 

How do you desensitise the NS? 

A flare up is an adjustment period - AP. This means that your NS is responding to expansion. This does not mean you should be scared of an AP and that you are getting worse! It actually means that your NS is getting used to your new baseline. During an AP, it is completely fine to participate in activities if you feel up for it! This is intuitively pacing. There is no need to strictly pace. I allow myself to rest more but it is not because something bad will happen if I don’t. It is just allowing yourself to accept the AP and rest if you need. Nudging is so important, pushing yourself is never the answer. An example of nudging yourself could be walking down your stairs for the first time and bringing symptoms with you. Re - introducing safety and little by little you will be able to go out on a walk etc.
