The E.N.D. draws on the house dance cypher—a circle where dancers take turns in the center while others hold space—as a structure for collective grief. That form comes from Black and Latinx queer communities in Chicago and New York in the 1980s, and it already knew how to do this. So did the Lamay, the Filipino communal wake.

Dancers and musicians build an intimate understanding of each other's rhythms over time — through Kapwa (shared self) and Bayanihan (communal care) as living principles, not just references.

Each performance ends with an open cypher: the circle expands and the audience is invited in.

It grew from years on Vancouver's floors and in its ciphers, from the Filipinx diasporic stories that don't fit cleanly into Western grief, from a question Joshee kept coming back to: what does it sound like when a room is allowed to feel something together?

Developed through residencies at 333nergy Studio, VS Creative Lab, and St. Paul's Anglican Church, Vancouver.
