Question 5

What are Community Cats?

Accepted Answer

“Community Cats” is a term used to describe outdoor, unowned, free-roaming cats. These cats can be friendly, feral, adults, kittens, healthy, sick, altered and/or unaltered.

Community cats naturally seek out places with food and shelter and are adept at finding these resources on their own. They may or may not have a caretaker. A caretaker is a person who conducts TNRM and provides care to a community cat, but who is not the legal owner.

If community cats appear to be healthy, and thriving within the natural environment, it’s best not to bring them to animal shelters.

Community cats who end up in shelters make up a large percentage of cats euthanized throughout the country every year.

Question 6

What is TNVR?

Accepted Answer

TNVR stands for "Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return"- a more humane approach way to manage cat populations and help community cats. Community cats are unowned, free-roaming cats living within your community who thrive outdoors. In a TNVR program, cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies, ear-tipped for easy ID, and returned to their outdoor homes. This ensures no new kittens are born, stabilizes cat populations, provides vaccines, and improves cats’ lives. It also stops the behaviors and stresses associated with mati

Question 7

What is Ear-Tipping?

Accepted Answer

Ear-Tipping is the universal symbol of a community cat who has been spayed or neutered. Ear-tipping is a widely accepted means of marking. It is the humane, safe surgical removal of the top quarter-inch of the left or right ear. The procedure is performed by a licensed veterinarian, typically during the spay/neuter surgery and rarely requires aftercare. Ear-tipping prevents an already-spayed or neutered cat the stress of re-trapping and an unnecessary surgery.

Question 8

Why are Community Cats almost always E*thanized?

Accepted Answer

Community cats thrive in their outdoor habitats, with their cat family & friends ("colony") - that is their home.

So, when community cats are taken into a shelter and placed alone in the confines of a small metal cage, they mostly exhibit shy or frightened behavior. Then, shelters label them as "feral" which enable them to legally e*thanize healthy cats after several days.

Community cats who end up in shelters make up a large percentage of cats euthanized throughout the country every year.

Thus, it is best to TNVR which humanely manages the cat population, reduces health risks, enhances their well-being, then returns them to their original outdoor homes. This provides a compassionate, effective way for communities to coexist with them. It is not only effective, but it is kind.
