COMRADE CONSUMER: SHOPPING, STYLE, AND DESIRE ON SOCIALIST SCREENS

A two-part event exploring socialist consumerism in Czechoslovak, Polish, and Soviet films of “the long seventies.”

Free Access 📍 Online and in Prague 

To many, socialist cinema rarely brings to mind beauty parlors, leisurely shopping, or consumer abundance. Yet from the 1960s through the 1980s, studios in the Polish People’s Republic, Czechoslovakia, and the USSR often portrayed shopping as leisure and aspiration, revealing complex visions of everyday life under socialism.

This event invites scholars and the public to (re)discover national classics and overlooked gems, examining how style, consumption, and desire appeared on socialist screens.

Conceived and curated by Anastasia Mamaeva, PhD candidate at Sorbonne University (Paris).

Hosted by CEFRES and Ponrepo Cinema (National Film Archive, Prague), with support from the Polish Institute in Prague and UMR Eur’ORBEM (Paris).
