About

The Richmond Backyard Homes program is THIMBY’s third iteration, and aims to create affordable, full-amenities Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) housing. These homes will be offered to working unhoused individuals or small families. The team plans to pilot the City of Richmond’s “Tiny House on Wheels” ordinance by placing the first unit, currently under construction, in the backyard of a single family residence.

Project Statement
Solar Decathlon is partnering with the Samoan Community Development Center (SCDC) to revitalize and enhance their existing community center in San Francisco through an adaptive reuse project. The overarching goal of this project is to enhance the center's capacity to support and connect with the local community, fostering a more inclusive and engaging environment for all members to identify, celebrate, and embrace their culture. Currently, we are in construction of the first phase of the project– a renovation of the center’s garden and courtyard. This phase aims to create a vibrant, functional outdoor space that will serve as a focal point for community gatherings,activities/events, and SCDC’s youth and senior programming. 

Design Approach
Rooted in the values of participatory design, SD believes that design should be community-driven. With the value of users as stakeholders, SD seeks to involve, collaborate, and empower communities through the process of design.

Consulting is the latest group established under the Sustainable Housing at Cal umbrella organization! 

– Currently Recruiting Teams/Roles –  
Analysts for our client teams: City, Housing, or Operations. 
All members will be working on an internal project in addition to client project(s). Members have had success transitioning from analyst to project manager within a school year, and propose/lead their own projects with SHAC resources!

We currently have two main operations 1) internal infrastructure development focused on creating our playbook, sustainability framework, and project lifecycles tool and 2) external client partnership projects work with clients including city governments, budding non-profits, BIPOC focused sustainability educators, and international urban design competitions. 

Alumni and current members have gone on to work in building sustainability, planning and engineering consultancies, policy-making organizations, and more!
