The 2019 vintage has a slight departure from previous years in that it's a pure expression of Syrah as we did not co-ferment with Gruner Veltliner (for interest, taste it side-by-side with the 2018 to see if you can spot a difference). We used our favoured high proportion of whole-clusters to bring aromatic lift, complexity and structure to the wine. The 2019 vintage was exceptional in the Bay with incredible density of flavour as well as a resounding freshness. Ultimately this Syrah demonstrates the phenomenal potential Gimblett Gravels has for producing cool-climate Syrah and we are thrilled with the stylistic consistency this special single vineyard is delivering. Full in the mouth, all that lovely smoky flintiness. Firmly textured, deep, immensely fresh and very long. A classic in this style with fruit sweetness on the finish. The effects of reduction fade back to a certain extent on the day after opening to show more fruit. Salty/smoky/flinty aftertaste. Seems to be ageing very slowly, rather like a ripe Bordeaux white than classic NZ Sauvignon. I wonder what a percentage of Sémillon might add? It has certainly not taken a shy and retiring approach. This puncheon-fermented, dry-farmed cuvée is aged on lees for a lengthy 15 months, resulting in a wine that is intense, aromatic and structured. Punchy blackcurrant, nectarine, lemon and almond meal flavors combine with a green-toned edge. While its component parts don't feel united as yet – there's a lot going on here and the fruit seems more overt in this vintage – there's a sense that this will outlive the already-mellowing 2019, such is its youth and force. The 2020 is impressive but a little edgy right now. Marked struck-match, smoky, cordite first impression, but not excessive unless you don’t like this style. This is bold, fresh, with the start of some cedary development of bottle age. On the palate, the texture is rounded and deep, filling the mouth but still incredibly fresh. Long, mouth-watering, salty finish, and a promise of more bottle-aged complexity to come. Pale, translucent lemon-green in the glass, with gorgeous almond, nectarine, pink grapefruit, blackcurrant and elderflower aromas. Mineral, saline and wet-stone, flinty characters precede a fine, taut palate of red apple, guava, greengage and preserved lemon. As much about a delicious savouriness as fruit; it is layered and balanced, whilst retaining a bright freshness and acidity. Not typical for this varietal, there’s good weight, silken texture and a little toasty oak influence, that adds to the complexity and sets it in the top tier of NZ Sauvignons made in this style. Its vividly sketched acidity allows it to carry the powerful but savoury oak in a defined yet impressive manner. This is a wine for drinking now for its crystalline purity, or cellaring and reaping the benefits of tertiary development in many years to come. In the mouth, the wine is carried in this same style, and it works so well. The curry-leaf character really is an accentuated character here, so if you're not into it, it won't work so well for you; but I happen to love it, so I am enjoying the wine immensely. We think it's one of the most special sites in Central and this vintage continues with its theme of serious savouriness and class. The 2021 vintage has that beautiful contrast between lifted florals and crunchy red fruits as well as a savoury, sappy complexity suggesting forest floor and subtle smoked game. Structurally this comes in the perfect Gibbston package of fresh acidity and satiny, sleek tannins. A real charmer that encapsulates why we love this Central Otago subregion so much. Wild fermentation, 50% whole-cluster inclusion and a low-toast oak regime gives elegance, complexity and structure to the wine. Maintaining our minimalist philosophy, we bottle without filtration which means nothing is taken away though a natural deposit will occur over time. Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, vibrant and savoury, with fresh acidity and deep, ripe cherry, plum, spice and herb flavours, that build to a long, harmonious, finely structured finish. The fruit is ripe, absolutely juicy but remains wonderfully translucent, with every berry and cherry nuance, every shimmer of spiciness, highlighted by brilliant acidity and supported by silk chiffon tannins. The wine is floral and perfumed on the nose, and the palate follows in a neat two-step formation. The fruit is capacious and ample, but it is held together by very fine tannins. It is mysterious and brooding, luring you into a labyrinth of flavours and textures.
