Please ensure you & your family are dressed appropriately for the event. It can often get colder as it gets darker and the weather can change quite quickly too. Warm, water proof clothing, layers if you feel you might need them, hats & gloves and appropriate footwear for rain / mud are always a good call.


1. Weather Conditions

A reminder that there is poor visibility after Maghrib, which can lead to falls, and other accidents. For the dark, torches are a useful option as well as using the light on your mobile. Head torches can be helpful especially if your hands will be carrying things like picnic blankets, prayer mats and viewing equipment.

2. Lighting Conditions

We will gather on the open grass area facing the city centre in front of the mound in the park. Please lay down picnic blankets here and instruct your children to play in front of you so they can be seen by you at all times. This will prevent an unintentional crowd from gathering on the mound, which can lead to accidents and children getting lost. 

3. Overcrowding Concerns

Please ensure your children are supervised by yourself at all times. The park has various play areas and children can often be tempted to visit them instead of staying in the area assigned for moonsighting. Please ensure you are with them if they choose to go to these areas to ensure their safety.

If you prefer your children to stay in the vicinity of the moonsighting event please bring equipment, resources, games etc to keep them occupied & engaged so they stay where you can see them.

4. Child Safety

Please be aware that there are no toilet facilities on the park's grounds. The nearest public rest rooms can be found at The Swan Shopping Centre opposite the park. 

5. Toilet Facilities

This is a volunteer led event, key volunteer personnel will be wearing high visibility vests. If you have a query about anything during the event, these are the people to approach and ask your questions to.

6. Communication On The Day

There is no official viewing equipment provided by NCS. If viewing equipment is set up on the mound / on the grass area, it personally belongs to those who are attending. 

Often this equipment is expensive, quite fragile and prone to breakage. It can also be heavy and risks becoming unstable when crowds gather around it. 

It is therefore extremely important that both children & adults do not attempt to use the equipment of others without asking permission first. Some attendees with equipment may have a specific protocol with regards to equipment use, please follow this to ensure the kit is kept safe and you and your children do not suffer accidents due to equipment falling. It is advisable that parents accompany their children to any viewing tech / equipment and encourage them to form orderly queues if required to ensure their safety. 

Often the owners of said tech / equipment will not allow children to view through their kit without a parent being present. Please respect this.

7. Respect for Viewing Equipment & Tech

This event & your participation in it is part of a national effort to witness the New Crescent moon in the UK to help mark the start of the next Islamic month & collect data for the roll out of the calendar across the country. As such we will be joined by moonsighters virtually across the UK who will be sighting alongside us in their own locality.

The volunteer team will be keeping an eye on the national progress of sightings and may declare the start of the next month, before any sighting of the moon has been witnessed in Birmingham. This will only happen as a result of substantial positive sighting testimonies being received by NCS to warrant the official declaration of the start of the month.

8. The Moonsighting Experience

If weather allows, many of us may be staying at the sighting location until Moonset time hoping to catch a glimpse of the crescent for ourselves. Know that you are welcome to stay with us if you feel able to do so. If you do decide to leave, be sure to keep an eye on the whatsapp group for updates.
