In the Spring of 2011, I took a train to Queens for a photo project. As soon as I got off the train I saw people covered in colored powders. Little did I know it was for a day called Holi, a celebration in the Indian community also known as the Festival of Colors, or the Festival of Love and Spring. The festival celebrates the eternal and divine love of Radha Krishna. The playful throwing of natural colored powders, called gulal has a medicinal significance: the colors are traditionally made of neem, kumkum, haldi, bilva, and other medicinal herbs suggested by Āyurvedic doctors. 

I shot this photo on the way to the park, which was filled with waves of people throwing around vivid colored powder in the air. I was hesitant to get dirty at first, but before I could back away - I had beautiful brown people covering me with their colored powders and contagious positive vibrations. It was the most fun I'd had in a long time, especially after being away from my hometown. This piece is a reminder of the unexpected joy I found that day. Imagine all the fun we can miss out on by not wanting to get our hands dirty?

(My dream car is also a Benz. G-Wagon to be exact!)
